"THEY'RE NOT INVESTMENTS" – Are we right to be buying these bags for financial gain?

Hey everyone! It’s not uncommon for me to see some comments saying “Designer handbags aren’t investments”

Social media does promote the notion that designer goods are ‘investments’, but are they investments in the sense that you’ll only ever need to buy one. Or, are they financial investments?
My thoughts are that yes, SOME designer bags are financial investments. It’s well known that Hermes are the top of the game when it comes to true returns on investment (breaking-even or making a profit).
From my personal experience, Chanel is too.
But, what about those other bags often spoken about as being financial investments? Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior? Are they REALLY bags you can get your money back on? Or are you better sticking to property, stocks, bonds, gold etc?

Let me know what you think!

Hey everyone! It’s not uncommon for me to see some comments saying “DESIGNER BAGS AREN’T INVESTMENTS”

The promotion on social media of items being ‘investment’ is pretty widespread, is it true though? IMO, there are only a few brands that are true financial investments – those are CHANEL & HERMES.

I have seen profits being made from new seasonal bags that sold-out before they hit the shelves, being flipped for profit on consignment sites.
Anyone remember in 2018, the Dior Book Tote being sold on consignment sites for MORE than the RRP, because they were near impossible to get?
Then you have the bags that appreciate because they’re hard to get and the prices keep going up.

That said, there are also the traditional forms of long-term investment, such as property, gold, bonds, stocks etc.
What do you think? Have you made money from designer goods? I think they are great to have as assets for if you ever need to raise funds quickly, when your money might be tied-up elsewhere. Buy the right bag/brand, and they are undoubtably an asset that appreciates in value if you take care of it.
But I personally wouldn’t advocate you sink your life savings into a bag collection and nothing else. Put it into other forms of investment too.
    Please share your thoughts!!x

P.S. Lots of you ask me where to sell, I have sold on Vestiaire Collective (they charge 30% thought), ebay (their fees are high but less than VC, you can wait for a ‘no seller fees’ promotion), Depop (although they take 10% and PayPal take a further 7%). Vinted has caught my eye as they don’t charge so it’ll just be PayPal taking a cut)

  2. i understand why people buy bags as investment, however i dont understand people that buy bags as an investment and then wear them out. like, if its an investment, don't you want to keep them in pristine condition?

  3. 👍

  4. Another investment that a lot of people don’t consider often is collecting fine antiques. I’ve been in the antique business for a decade now and have seen vintage and antique items increase seven and eight fold just in this time.

  5. But VC also takes a huge cut from sellers like 20% if I remember right. So not worth reselling. I’m sure the sellers that sells a lot on VC get better deals though

  6. I think apparel and jewelry from designers are investments but also items that are made to help someone feel more superior to others. I don’t buy bags because I think they’d draw too much attention if I wore them but I do buy shoes a lot and I’ve brought myself a bracelet but I don’t plan in keeping a consistent focus on how it’s price is fluctuating, i did buy some shoes though in September of 2019 and I paid $430 for them excluding fees and almost two months ago they were in the low $500’s but currently their $460 so they haven’t risen by a lot in price but their staying stable so I’m happy about it but I think their only going up because the shoe model is very popular but the material itself isn’t anything too special it’s just a very nice design, durable, and can be worn in a lot of different environments

  7. A good external mic in a room with good acoustics is the best investment.

    * CANT RELATE

  9. Designer bags are not investment. I don’t see them as investments. I buy classic pieces to wear and enjoy. I will give them to my daughter when she grows up.

  10. What investment for me is the quality of the bag will it last that I could pass it on the my daughter. I don’t buy and thinking of selling it.

  11. I never buy bags in order to sell them. I love every piece I have and I would say may bags are all classy ones so I can wear them for years (which I already do). I personally have a problem with selling stuff for much more on Vestiaire than you actually paid. We are talking about used stuff! For me it is an ethic principle. It feels like ripping off somebody.

  12. All I can say I can’t afford any of them and think GOD I just don’t care that much on handbags 👜………MY thing is 👠………

  13. love your videos honestly

  14. I put $1500 in a mutual fund in 2000. It is over $10,000 now.

  15. I was a reseller. There is money to be made, but like Sophie said you need to be smart with your purchase. There will be a niche client that is looking for the random item. Items that not a lot people are buying. You need to be mindful of the market, what your customer is looking for, the trends, and maintain a strong relationship with the retailers and your clients.

  16. I don’t see these things as investments. I buy them because I enjoy them. Even though I know I will probably get my money back if I hold some of my bags long enough. I see that as a possible perk on the future but not as an investment.

  17. Not only you
    Even Jeffrey star said investments
The answer is No don’t believe
Just save for your future my opinion is
Just buy anything you enjoy and
Make you happy and beautiful 🌹

  18. INVEST THAT MONEY FOR LONGTERM LADIES! You will make enough to buy like 10 of those Hermes 😂

No it’s not it kept changing style so so later it eill nothing can’t even sell it to a higher price de valued 🤭

  20. A question that has been bothering me recently: do you wear the bags that are an investment and you hope to resell them one day? Or do you keep them untouched on a shelf to be able to sell them in pristine condition, i.e. for higher price?

  21. I would say, for everyone, you should have a healthy emergency fund before you invest in luxury goods! I wouldn’t rely on having to sell something to pay for an emergency.

If you have a comfortable cushion, I don’t see a problem buying something in hopes of flipping it or selling it the future to make your money back.

  22. Are you a Freemason?

  23. Thanks to this video (you) I bought that amazing cardigan and love it ❤️

  24. The value/worth of anything is whatever someone feels it's worth paying.

  25. An investment should be for a product that will be used like it's meant to and guaranteed quality and insured especially if you're not financially privileged, can be more secure than buying a new $30 handbag every year that eventually breaks.

  26. If you need the money right away, selling your handbags to raise that money will be difficult. Better investing in something liquid, like stocks in good companies or ETF.

I tend to not buy luxury goods for investment I buy because I like it and was to use everyday and keep forever

  28. Can you help me? I am struggling to decide what investment bag to get… I have a LV multicolour Blanc Alma and a Chanel Melrose Vinyl Quilted Jumbo Degrade Flap Ombre!

  29. Just because a bag is expensive does not mean it is an investment. Some of these bags are relatively easy to sell on the preloved market and some are not.

Can u do a YSL handbag video? Like which one to avoid and to buy? Resale wise? I know ysl is not a brand you can get any discounts on now, atleast over here in the states. Also, chanel bags are over 1000$ more over here compared to the UK. I looked at getting a mini but they're still 5k on preloved. Forget getting a medium bc those are 7k in good condition.

I have three LV Speedys that I wanted to sell No consignment shop in Zurich (last week) wanted them as they have too much stock. They all told me to return in September. I think the market has peaked.

  32. I think of bags as what they are accesories, bags I want to wear not sell, they are not investments and should not be treated as such

I don't buy only billionaire likes it..

  34. Even if I’ve read some articles saying handbags are investments, I still don’t believe it. I’ve never heard of anyone who became rich buying handbags. Stocks, real estate… yes. Handbags?… idk 🤔

  35. I’ve just been having this ‘discussion’ with the woman from ‘the handbag clinic ‘ ( not a place I would risk sending any of my leather items) who is peddling ‘buy this Chanel -It’s an investment’ on their Facebook ads. She claims it’s a better investment than property smdh 🙄

  36. It depends on the quality of the product, how many purposes I can give it, and how long I can use it for. I won’t make monetary gain from a fjällräven Kånken, but it’s a good quality product that can be used for different purposes for the next 10+ years. That’s a personal investment that I’m willing to make, and the things I’ve listed are reasons why the ‘investment’ is justified

  37. I've tried to buying bags to sell, but when it comes time to sell the bag… I don't want to part with it.

I WOULD RATHER GET A $500 LEATHER PRATESI FOR $99 AT TJ MAXX. I WOULD NOT SPEND MORE THAN THAT ON A PURSE. HOW SILLY. WHO DO I NEED TO IMPRESS WITH AN OUTRAGEOUSLY PRICED BAG?

  39. I've always wanted a luxury bag, but ive never gotten one. Hopefully one day, but im disabled so im not too hopeful🙃

  40. Well said , thanks for sharing

  41. These bags are not really investments… there's a ceiling on how much people are willing to spend on these bags. If you're buying it from a reseller, it won't make you the same profit when you sell it.

  42. This has me thinking…How about investing in the company itself? Is investing in Dior or Chanel a good investment? Shares go up and down and there is a lot of variables if a company does well. What do you think?

  43. Just buy a bag because you will enjoy it and use it. Simple!!! Not too complicated is it. I love all my birkins and my Evelyn’s and use them every day and by seasons !!

  44. property is the best, I made 200K profit in 6 years, bought a 1 bedroom in 2008 for 143K and sold it for 350K in 2014. I have a Chanel mini and various LVs, bought them to enjoy, not as investments at all.
