The one about H. H. Holmes is…very inaccurate. While Holmes was certainly a killer, most of what she said is false, a figment of the late 1800's tabloid journalism's wild imagination and need of a juicy front-page story.
First of all, the hotel wasn't even a hotel, the first floor consisted of storefronts, the second floor had apartments for rent (and no, there is no evidence he killed any of his tenants). A third floor was added in 1892. Holmes said he planned to used this floor as a hotel, but it never opened. And there were no trap doors or shoots leading to the basement. There were a few hidden rooms, but those were for hiding furniture he bought on credit and didn't intend on paying for.
As for killing 27 people, possibly 200 – there are 9 people we can say with some confidence that Holmes probably killed them. He confessed to killing 27 people at some point, but some of those people were found out to be alive. Also, he was $7,500 for that confession by the Hearst newspapers so…
As for the 'possibly up to 200 victims' part, that likely started with a book written in 1940 called ''Gem of the Prairie''. It said that some people suggested Holmes killed about 200 people. In reality, nobody actually suggested that before. But people didn't know that, and it soon became a accepted as an actual, credible possibility.
So yeah, SLIGHTLY inaccurate account given here. Hope this girl does better research on other cases she covers.
