A lot of people wonder why you take the total hem amount and cut this number in half. If I fold up 1" and sew at the top, it's 1" on the front and 1" on the back, meaning I'm eventually cutting off a total of 2" from the bottom of the pants. If your still unsure, pin your hem and try them on before sewing and cutting, this way it'll turn out perfectly. Sorry for the confusion and I hope this helps.

  2. Outstanding video, but that's a lot of intro…

  3. Why won't this work with flare jeans? Is there a technique that will?

  4. super helpful. Bill in Uk with Elna Lotus vintage machine

I noticed your jeans were straight-leg. What would you do for flared jeans? The bottom seam (cuff) is longer than the area it would be sown onto.

  14. hi do you have a video on taking the waist in on jeans cheers great tutorial videos

  15. You save me money. It's quite easy to do. I don't cut the excess, I just iron it real good, spray with water 1st, so it won't bulge. It works.

  16. I've been sewing (buttons, experiments) for 25+ years, but never hemmed and was shocked I accidentally ordered jeans for tall, and 5 inches needed to be hemmed & I didn't want a raw hem; long story short, I found your video & it gave me the confidence I needed to hem them myself and I did… Perfectly!! Thank you much!!!

  17. This tutorial is brilliant. I just did this for two pairs of jeans this weekend. They came out perfectly. I've never touched a sewing machine, until now.

  18. EXCELLENT video. THANK YOU!

  19. Very helpful

  20. Goodness, your presentation displayed this all so well. Thank you. 🌹

  21. Thank you. I followed these instructions and it worked perfectly. Very easy to follow.

  22. This is an excellent video! I wish I'd watched it before I tried it on my own and made my pants too short! After ripping out two rows of stitching and watching your video, my pants turned out perfect!

  23. Thank you so much…I’ve watched many videos and yours is so clear and easy to follow. Thanks a million!

  24. Very good thks

  25. What a wonderful tutorial -thanks so much!

  26. Any tips on sewing over the really thick part of the side seam on denim pants? Every time I try it, the bottom thread gets all bunched up into a birds nest. I’m using a Schmetz Jeans/ Denim chrome needle, 130/705 H-J CF 100/16 idk if that helps diagnosing.

just use a zipper foot, no need to sew the other way around

  31. Thank you! I appreciated your simple, clear-cut instructions!

  32. Great tutorial!

  33. Thank you! I have needed this video for years!

  34. I just followed this. Instead of topstitch I did some decorative flowers. The pewter didn't show up like I was hoping, but I'm still pleased. Thank you so much!

  35. Your finger nails are so pretty!

  36. I had to fight with this one also.
Make the numbers bigger and it's easier to understand.
If you pin up a 20 inch inseam so there's a 8 inches taken off including a 1 inch hem, your left with a 12 inch inseam (yeah, that would make him really short :-)) So you want to end up with a 12 inch inseam when you are done with her method.
If you subtract the 1 inch hem like she did, you have 7 inches. Half that is 3.5 inches with the 1 inch hem leaves an inseam of 15.5 left so far (3.5 + 1 = 4.5 pinned up), until you flip that 3.5 up inside the leg, which would subtract another 3.5 inches leaving you with the 12 inches you want.
But….. when you flip the 3.5 inches inside the pant leg, the 1 inch hem flips/comes down leaving you with a 13 inch inseam.
That’s 1 inch longer than the 12 inch inseam you wanted.
It probably isn’t as noticeable when you only have a 1/2 inch hem.
I had a headache with this one, and hadn’t read the comments before figuring it out, which would have saved me a lot of time.
Having said that, there were a lot of great tips here.
    Thanks for your help.
So for these numbers, Please someone check my math: If you take half the part without hem 7/2=3.5 and add half the hem .5 inch = 4 inch. So 4 inch without hem + 1 inch hem on top = 5inch.
    Subtract 5 inches from 20 inch inseam = 15.
When you fold the 4 inches into pant leg that leave 11 inches.
But… the 1 inch hem comes down and gives you the 12 inch inseam.
    WHEW.
    TO SIMPLIFY:
Add half the original unhemmed pinned material 7 divided by 2 (the part without any hem) and add half the hem: 1 inch divided by 2, and unless I made a mistake, that’s the amount of unhemmed material 4 inches below the 1 inch hem on your final pinning before sewing.

  37. I don't get the part of reducing 2" to 1" (half way) and sew at the reduced hem.

  38. We wassed poor so I had wear my brother jean and he was taller and I always remember mom would say "I'll just hem em" ☺️

  39. Very cool. Gonna try. How much should I charge when doing for a client?

  40. Proffesor pincushion… Thank you I love this idea and looking forward to hemming jeans…You are awesome

  41. Thank you, a very clear and non irritating tutorial 💕

  42. Nice

  43. Thank you for a great video. I was able get a great result. I'm 5'2" and finding jeans that aren't 6"+ too long is a real struggle. I have a sewing machine, but I'm not super confident in my ability to use it, but I easily accomplished this by hand.

  44. This is great!
