John Oliver discusses PFAS — a class of chemicals linked to an array of health issues — and why their widespread use isn’t as …

  1. The worst part is there is no assistance for contaminated drinking water. I live just off of a water table that was contaminated by military aircraft firefighting drills. Everyone on that water table is just expected to purchase their drinking water.

I sit and watch the sophistry and word-of-mouth polis, sure. Knowledge is food and the pen is one's utensil. The awful truth is that the world creates the illusion of intellectual meals. One should have at least one quality intellectual meal a day. People are so intellectually starved that they can barely lift a paragraph verbatim. It is like something hidden in the robes of a twisted Dickensian "Christmas Story." I hate to point my finger. I hate to gasp in horror. The awful truth is their intellectual starvation!
They cannot open the book to page ten.
They cannot write a paragraph with a pen.
They cannot move a desk right in.
    They cannot learn a thing.
Mmmm. "Black Raven" is the first key to alchemic immortality.

  3. What really pepole drink from tap water i only drink bottle water

  4. HYDROFLUORIC ACID!?
    holy shit. That is bad.

  5. Bruhhh, maybe isolating and sticky to only hand made/ home grown resources is the way to go, kinda like Amish

  6. 1:51 but why is he holding a sticky note with a circled letter F? I need to know the context of that

  7. And it's go boys go
    They'll time your every breath
And every day you're in this place
    You're two days nearer death
    But you go

Well a process man am I
And I'm tellin' you no lie
I work and breathe among the fumes
    That trail across the sky
    There's thunder all around me
And there's poison in the air
    There's a lousy smell
    That smacks of hell
And dust all in me hair

    And it's go boys go
    They'll time your every breath
And every day you're in this place
    You're two days nearer death
    But you go

Well I've worked among the spitters
And I breathe the oily smoke
    I've shoveled up the gypsum
And it nigh on makes you choke
    I've stood knee-deep in cyanide
Got sick with a caustic burn
    Been working rough
    I've seen enough
    To make your stomach turn

    And it's go boys go
    They'll time your every breath
And every day you're in this place
    You're two days nearer death
    But you go

There's overtime and bonus opportunities galore
The young men like their money
And they all come back for more
    But soon you're knocking on
And you look older than you should
    For every bob
    Made on the job
You pay with flesh and blood

    And it's go boys go
    They'll time your every breath
And every day you're in this place
    You're two days nearer death
    But you go

Well a process man am I
And I'm telling you no lie
I work and breathe among the fumes
    That trail across the sky
    There's thunder all around me
And there's poison in the air
    There's a lousy smell
    That smacks of hell
And dust all in me hair

  8. "working to remove" or "trying to phase out" is such a BS line whether it's toxic chemicals in Chick-Fil-A wrappers or child slave chocolate in Nestlé candies because it's a straight-up admission that they were doing it and that they're going to keep doing it until some future date

  9. Oh look, yet another problem that can't be solved by thinking like a consumer. It's almost as if thinking like a consumer should be actively discouraged or something.

  10. PFAS can be broken down by sewerage grade pressure cookers (biochar?) like the one being tested in the USA (California?)

  11. It’s a serious topic, mixed with a weird attempt at humour from Oliver. Unsettling.

  12. Hey Not just put a 4-Tank-“Megatron" on where the water exits the factory?!?

  13. I love how in this country, you legally can’t state that a company is clearly subverting the law because our government is that enslaved to corporate interests

Parrot owners like myself get super cautious about having that shit in our homes and threw out any cookware that may contain it. Concerning that it's still so widely used and practically everywhere.

  15. Update for anyone who comes back to check. As of June 15th 2022 they updated the highest safe levels from 70 PPT all the way down to, get this, 0.0004 PPT. Ends up these things are dangerous, who knew!

  16. I know you said the answer is to regulate the entire class of chemicals, and that may be the best we can do, but a better answer is to take the European approach to chemical regulation – to have makers of chemicals prove they are safe – rather than the American approach of letting companies invent, manufacture, and sell products until the EPA says they have to stop – which it extremely difficult.

  17. My stepmom always roasted me about using non-stick and other sources of Teflon. What freaks me out is that Teflon is used to seal pipe joints in every water system on earth that uses pipe fittings. It's not good! Even in gas systems, compressed air, anything that handles pressurized fluids (liquids and gasses) uses Teflon tape as sealant.

  18. I've know about this shit for 20 years

  19. Get a cast iron pan, they last forever and get better over time, plus when you die you can leave it to your favourite child

  20. Why is he talking so fast

  21. I'm an EE, but all us engineers had to take a chemistry class. Outside the particular chemistry building (there are like 7 chemistry buildings) Chem for Engineers is taught is a historical plaque commemorating the invention of Teflon on that site. yaaaaaaaay.

  22. Similar thing happened when they put lead into gasoline only lead is more poisonous but fades from your body over time.
PFAS just accumulates and never leaves the body, so I'm very affraid we haven't seen the worst of this yet.

  23. Wait? So when your Teflon pan stops working (no longer non-stick) then you've essentially removed those chemicals very likely into your food?

FFS… I just noticed in the last few weeks that my nonstick pan has everything sticking to it now. How the fuck is this legal…. but marijuana (in most places) isnt?

Fuck this world…. humans just need to go extinct at this point. We are the worst.

If I were a god… I'd yeet nearly 50% of the population off this rock.

Anyone complicit in knowingly destroying our planet and its ability to support life as well as racists, bigots, xenophobes, homophobes, etc…… ALL JUST GONE! POOF!

PS. This would also rid us of the conservative / republican problem. There'd be so few left, they'd never win another election.

  24. Perfluorate PFA is the product of manufacturing waste burners and VX chemical weapon stockpile burning. The manufacturing of halogenated vinyl and halogenated carbon produces wastes and all of these millions of tons is burned to perchlorate perfluorate and perbromate. These are a form of halogenated carbon. The functional groups are known for their globally destructive effects on atmosphere and fertility. The reduction of fish populations is primarily caused by halogenated vinyl and halogenated carbon molecules. The effects of fishing are negligible in comparison to this pollution. The fishing of cod was ended in the north Sea for twenty years and the population of cod still declined.

  25. Middle child here. Sadly accurate.

White people shouldn't talk about slavery, no where in the history of America or the world have white people been slaves ever. Thank you for telling me what to say and think.

  27. sigh. money talks. bullshit walks. another forever thing.

  28. Surprise surprise! I used the map and it seems like it’s only in areas where it’s a “lower class” or “minority area” what a fucking surprise that yet again redlining and systematic racism again

  29. These are always depressing, but I've never seen one so universal. 99.7% of EVERYBODY? We're so fucked.

  30. welp, Dupont, another piece of shit company I need to boycott

A relative is working for a chemical plastic company and keeps telling us that we should avoid it at all costs, never buy wrapped food and never drink from plastic bottles. Same with Teflon.
