I have a similar fake bag that was my aunts, I believe. It’s not a camera bag, it’s a crossbody with a flap, but it’s narrow and tall, and has the same chain and tassel that yours has. I just keep it in my closet for display too lol.

I am not kidding you my mom have a similar bag in white that was purchased in the 70s and was recently serviced at the end of 2021 in the Chanel store at New York! I can take some pictures of it. It has the same tassels and I believe even the zipper pull is similar.

I’m sorry to hear about your incident at Chanel. The wording of the letter was extremely careful not to use any explicit terms calling it ‘a fake’ because of fear of a defamation lawsuit. It’s almost certain your grandparents purchased the bag from a flea market in Germany and your mother would have been aware of this (you have always only been able to purchase Chanel handbags at the store, for example you cannot purchase on their website, even to this very day). Also, you recall your mother carrying other ‘knock offs’, so again, it’s very likely she knew. The inside of the bag doesn’t have the serial code or the logo, a tell-tale sign. There’s a saying that has helped me and may also help you: “The memories are in us, not in the things that we own.” I’d say let go of the bag. Donate it to a charity store (they often send unsold inventory abroad to Africa and Eastern Europe). Rejoice in knowing someone else will derive benefit from it. It’s not necessarily something you will pass onto your children. So be content with the memory that it had of your mother (which is something that no material object can replace or validate). You can look back at this incident and smile, remembering the good times your mother had with the bag.
Fake or not, it was obviously something your mother loved. I think you should definitely keep it in honor of her! If you don't want to wear it, it would still be a nice item to keep on display in your closet and store any small items of hers that you held onto.

In navy blue, with the big CC on the front and just to give you an idea of the time line, it was late 80s or early 90s. It was a great bag. I loved it. Who cares if it's fake bag, it is a connection with your mom and this piece just meant something to you. I'm sorry for your loss and I'm sure ur mom just happy to know ur even saved some money and try to fix it. I honestly think the bag is very cute still, after all these years?? I would just keep it and wear this bag to special events or keep it in good shape on display, just something memorial. Don't need to feel embarrassed ,yes I understand , but it was the pressure they gave u, don't worry, it's their job as salesman for the company. What assholes. I’ve worked in high end retail before. I’ve also been a customer. Never let people that work retail make u feel embarrassed about urself or ur moms bag. Most of those uptight weirdos can’t even afford it anyway. 😂 Wear ur moms bag with pride. You’d be surprised both my real LV bags broke in a year and my Chanel bag was worn down in a year. It’s not really worth it if u ask me it’s just hype. Each time u repair it u have to pay a lot.
